Total Non-stop Action (TNA) is a relative newcomer to the wrestling industry, having been established in 2002. It has quickly become the second largest wrestling promotion in the USA and is televised all over the world. It's main championship is the TNA World Heavyweight Championship and this fourth article in the series examines the legitimacy of the championship's claim to 'World Status'. As in the previous articles, the claim will be examined in relation to the 5 criteria set out in the first article of the series.

1- That the belt should be defended regularly and currently, or at least occasionally, in more than one country and preferably several countries on more than one continent.

The TNA World Heavyweight Championship has never been defended outside of the USA.

The belt, therefore, fails to satisfy this criterion

2- That the belt should be contested fairly regularly by wrestlers of different nationalities.

The TNA world Heavyweight Championship has only ever been contested by wrestlers from Canada and the USA.

The belt, therefore, fails to satisfy the second criterion either

3 – That the belt and its lineage should be viewed as prestigious by the wrestling community (both wrestlers and fans) around the world.

Among many fans in the western world, this belt is considered to be the most prestigious of all the championships available particularly considering the disdain held towards the WWE by many serious wrestling fans and the fall from prominence of the NWA championship. A great many people would however consider it to be a company title only and that of a company that is considerably less popular than its main rival (WWE).

It can trace its roots easily through the NWA championship to the undisputed belts held by Hackenschmidt and later Thesz decades ago. This is due to the stripping of the NWA championship from Christian Cage in 2007 who immediately became the TNA World Heavyweight Champion. The lineage rests on the fact that Christian Cage was the NWA champion, never lost it and proclaimed the new TNA Championship as the World Championship. The argument against this is two-fold: that the NWA has the power to strip the champion of the belt at any time; that it was TNA who ended the championship deal with the NWA in 2007.

It can therefore be said that the belt is regarded as prestigious by a large part of the wrestling community around the world and satisfies this criterion.

4- That the belt should be the highest prize in any promotion in which it is contested.

The TNA World Heavyweight Championship is without doubt the highest prize available in the promotion.

The belt satisfies this criterion

5- That the belt should be regularly contested by well-respected and accomplished wrestlers.

At the time of writing, Samoa Joe has just become the new TNA Heavyweight Champion. He is probably one of the most respected and accomplished wrestlers in the world today and was 1st runner up in PWI's wrestler of the year award (2006). The previous champion Kurt Angle was regarded by many as the best wrestler in the world today and is an olympic gold medal winner in freestyle wrestling (Atlanta '96) as well as PWI wrestler of the year (2003). The only other past champion is Christian cage (PWI #7 in 2007) who is another very well-respected and accomplished wrestler.

Therefore, it can be said that this criterion is met easily.
